Soil Science Resources
This section contains a wide range of valuable resources including Peer-Reviewed Research Papers, Standards, Guidelines, Reports and links to useful information. It will be constantly updated as new material comes to hand.
Resources
Resources are grouped below under Soil Science, Agriculture and Horticulture. They range from items captured from media sources through to peer-reviewed scientific papers. They aim to inform, educate and sometimes amuse.

Soil Science
Below, please find links to useful and valuable resources:
Soils Alive! Although this research was completed in Tasmania, it has universal application in helping understand and manage soil biology.

Agriculture
Regenerative Agriculture. ReGen Soils developed two series of videos during lockdown aimed at helping farmers navigate a path towards regenerative practices.
Food Economy and Agroecology Strategy.
At its December 2022 meeting, Mornington Peninsula Shire Council adopted its Food Economy and Agroecology Strategy. This initiative of Council’s makes a huge commitment to regenerative agriculture and aims to change the way food is produced on the peninsula. ReGen Soils led the development of the strategy, ably supported by Helen Millicer from One Planet Consulting and David Rako from DJR Environmental. Very big thanks to Anita Buczkowsky, Sarah Saxton and many more from MPSC for their help in making it happen.

Soil biology.
In 2013 I wrote the inaugural chapter on Soil Biology for the Dairy Industry’s Dairy Soils and Fertiliser Manual.

Natural Capital Accounting. How do you know if you are leaving your land in better condition? Accounting for Nature develops and validates methods for environmental accounting. ReGen Soils’ developed the Soil Assessment for Productive Land method for Landcare Australia. It is one of three soil methods accredited by Accounting for Nature.

Visual Soil Assessments.
Northern Rivers Soil Health Card. This method was developed by and for farmers. It is simple to use employing materials found on most farms.

Visual Soil Assessment. This approach, developed by New Zealand Soil Scientist Graham Shepherd, has been taken up and expanded by the UN’s FAO. It is comprehensive in its scope. An excellent feature is its scoring system which allows accurate comparison of soil and land condition over time.
Horticulture
Sodic / Dispersive Soils
Investigation of Sodic / Dispersive Soils is a large part of ReGen Soils activities. During my time with the Tasmanian State Government, my team produced Dispersive Soils and their Management. This is the definitive guide to the management of these problem soils in Australia.

Acid sulfate soils
My team also produced the valuable Tasmanian Acid Sulfate Soil Management Guideline.
